Ceiling Fan and Light Working Together? The Fan Wasn’t the Problem.
Recently, a homeowner contacted Classic Fans & Blinds after purchasing an ICON 44 ceiling fan through a retail store.
When he experienced a problem with the installation, the product’s main South African supplier referred him to us for technical assistance.
The customer explained that both the ceiling fan and the light were operating together instead of independently through the wall-mounted remote control, which is how the ICON 44 is designed to function. He was also concerned because his electrician had left a wire disconnected above the wall remote.
Rather than making assumptions, we asked the customer to send us photographs of the installation. After reviewing them, we identified that the wiring did not match the manufacturer’s recommended configuration.
We supplied the customer with reference photographs showing the correct wiring arrangement for the ICON 44 wall remote. He forwarded these to his electrician, who returned to the property and rewired the installation according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Once the wiring was corrected, the fan and light operated independently as designed. The customer later confirmed that everything was working perfectly and thanked us for the assistance.
What Homeowners Can Learn
This case is a good reminder that a ceiling fan isn’t always at fault when something doesn’t work correctly. In many cases, the issue is simply an installation or wiring error.
To avoid unnecessary problems:
- Always use a qualified electrician experienced with ceiling fan installations.
- Follow the manufacturer’s wiring instructions for the specific model being installed.
- Never assume every ceiling fan uses the same wiring configuration.
- If something doesn’t operate correctly, seek technical advice before reconnecting wires or replacing parts.
Choosing an installer based purely on price can sometimes result in additional call-outs and unnecessary expense if the installation has to be corrected later.
At Classic Fans & Blinds, we regularly provide technical support for the products we know, even when they were purchased through retail outlets. Our goal is to help ensure every customer ends up with a safe, correctly installed ceiling fan that performs exactly as the manufacturer intended.
